“Innovations could be a key for attracting and retaining young people in rural areas”, stated by the Minister of Agriculture and Food, Dr. Georgi Tahov, during the informal meeting of the EU Council on Agriculture and Fisheries, held in Warsaw, Poland.

He emphasized that generational renewal is crucial for the implementation of innovations, as young people are much more inclined to apply digital solutions in agriculture. According to him, when the agriculture sector is perceived as modern with development potential, it becomes more attractive to young entrepreneurs and specialists, including those with technical, business or scientific education.

“In Bulgaria, the population in rural areas continues to decline. The number of people of working age has dropped dramatically in some municipalities. However, the share of young farmers in our country is growing, which shows the potential for sustainable renewal,” minister Tahov added. He highlighted that interventions for young farmers under the Common Agricultural Policy play a key role, allowing them to set up and develop their own farms.

“Aligning sufficient financial resources to young farmers under direct payments for the longest possible period of time, with simplified requirements, will facilitate the sustainable development of economic activity in rural areas. Along with this support, low-interest or interest-free loans for starting agricultural activities would be a serious financial incentive for young people,” he added.

During the meeting, the Bulgarian Minister of Agriculture stated that improving qualifications is a key step in building confidence and an entrepreneurial spirit in young people. Minister Tahov noted that internships with established farmers are a valuable and effective tool for practical training.

"The issue of generational renewal should be considered as a horizontal priority for all funding programs. Without an improved quality of life, young people would have difficulty deciding whether to stay in rural areas, regardless of economic incentives. The most effective tool are measures that combine financial support, education, access to resources and an improved living environment," Minister Tahov concluded.
