Inspectors of Bulgaria’s National Agency of Fisheries and Aquaculture (NAFA) have stepped up checks at dams and shops across the country ahead of Saint Nicholas’ Day, December 6, traditionally marked with fish meals.

A total of 933 checks were carried out over the week ending December 2, with almost 2 tonnes of fish was seized from poachers and illegal sale.

NAFA experts drew up 71 statements for illegal fishing, and for unauthorized sale and transportation of fish. Over 6 km of poacher nets were confiscated during the check-ups nationwide.

No violations were discovered during a check for unauthorized sale of fish and fish products at the Zhenski Pazar marketplace. Two statements were drawn up by the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency for improper fish storage and for an expired health book of a shopkeeper.
