In the period from February 8 to February 11, 2012 the Republic of Portugal held a demonstration seminar on the good practices of the European country in forest fires surveillance through information systems under the project “European Forest Fire Monitoring using Information Systems” of the INTERREG IVC programme. Experts from the Executive Forestry Agency, which is a beneficiary of the project, took part in the meeting.

The seminar was opened by Mr. Rui Almeida, the Mayor of the Municipality of Batalia. The hosts gave presentations on the organization of firefighting institutions and investments in preventing forest fires using Global Information System (GIS). Internet applications giving information of the availability of important objects and equipment in forest firefighting were also shown. The subject of preventing the peak fires spread was discussed as well.

The Greek partners in the project presented the SAFER system introduced in the region of Messinia, Greece. On the second day the participants were able to see the types of forest territories and the reservoirs built in order to provide the flying machines with water when extinguishing a fire. The emphasis of the meeting was the subject of the investments which Portugal makes to prevent forest fires.

Representatives of Lithuania, Spain, Bulgaria, Greece and the host country Portugal took part in the working meetings.
