Minister of Agriculture and Food Miroslav Naydenov announced that Bulgaria will claim compensation for over 10 million leva losses resulting from unsold on the market Bulgarian cucumbers because of the outbreak of a particularly virulent strain of Escherichia coli bacteria. This became clear at the extraordinary meeting of EU Ministers on Agriculture and Fisheries, held today in Luxembourg. the agriculture ministers are discussing how best to compensate for the huge losses suffered by producers in the EU. As Spanish cucumbers were initially wrongly mentioned in some media as a possible source of contamination, consumption of cucumbers and other fresh vegetables has plummeted around Europe. Minister Naydenov informed that since the beginning of the crisis Bulgarian cucumber producers lost 1 million leva a day, making 7 million leva or about 3.5 million euro in a week. Losses are accumulating even now, said Naydenov who quoted the Bulgarian Greenhouse Association and added that their data coincide with those of the ministry.
