An illegal dealer of beluga caviar has been detained near Kazanlak by a mobile group of the Executive Agency for Fishery and Aquacultures (IARA), police and regional directorates of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency.

The authorities seized around 20 kg of caviar and lodged a complaint against the offender.

The beluga, also known as European sturgeon, is a protected species as per Order RD09-43 dated 20.01.2012 of the minister of agriculture and food. Fishing, transportation and sale of sturgeon and sturgeon products caught in the Bulgarian areas of the Danube and the Black Sea is prohibited for a period of four years. Offenders can be sentenced to up to one year behind bars and a fine of up to BGN 1,000.
