Minister of Agriculture and Food Dr. Miroslav Naydenov supports business for setting up of food banks in Bulgaria. This was announced by the Minister during the signing of a pact on this year’s Safe Easter initiative, organized by the newspaper "Standard". The idea was proposed by the Association of Meat Processors in Bulgaria. "Food banks are a tradition in the U.S. and Western Europe," the Minister explained. "They collect products approaching their expiration date but not yet expired. Instead of foodstuffs to be discarded by manufacturers and dealers they are delivered to social homes, "added Minister Naydenov. He hopes the idea will be also supported by Social Minister Totyu Mladenov, Economy Minister Traycho Traykov and Finance Minister Simeon Dyankov. Kiril Vatev, Chairman of the Association of Meat Processors said that the setting up of food banks is good for society and therefore regulations should be drafted. Besides food expiry date, food banks also work with products with trade dress infringement, but first they should be tested whether they are safe and edible, said Kiril Vatev.
