Minister of Agriculture and Food Dr. Miroslav Naydenov announced that it is being worked on the creation of legislation for food banks in Bulgaria. He participated in the annual
Food Bank Forum in Sofia Radisson Hotel and donated Bulgarian cans.
Legal frame pursuant to the Food Law is to be drafted. A working group to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food has been formed for this purpose.
"I hope that the cans will reach people who need them," he said. The idea is very successful in the U.S. and the European Union. Setting up of a food bank will make possible the provision of food to the poorest people. "The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency will collect products approaching their expiration date but not yet expired and they will be delivered to to poor people," he said. Food banks receive donated food and provide it to the needy, not only to social housing, he explained.
Minister Naydenov added that he supports the abolition of VAT on food donated to the needy through a network of food banks. Food banks operate on the principle of collecting products approaching their expiration date but not yet expired. Instead of foodstuffs to be discarded by manufacturers and dealers they are delivered to social products with trade dress infringement, but first they should be tested whether they are safe and edible, explained Minister Naydenov.
