Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Dr. Tzvetan Dimitrov opened a national conference: on "Promoting payments for ecosystem services (PES) and sustainable financing schemes in the Danube Basin" in the Forum Hotel, Sofia. The conference was jointly organized by the WWF International Environmental Organization and National Agency for Fisheries and Aquaculture. Executive Director of the Agency for Fisheries and Aquaculture Yavor Nedev also attended the conference. The aim of this project is to support the owners and users of lands who by managing them care for nature conservation. The project is implemented by the WWF - Bulgaria and with the financial support of UNEP GEF and the European Commission.
Government policy over the past two years aims to grant funds oriented to activities which are expected to give concrete results. The issue of promoting payments for ecosystem services is a priority for agricultural policy in Bulgaria and finds its place in agricultural policy of Europe, said Deputy Minister Dimitrov at the conference.
