Bulgarian forests are one of our few national treasures and we ought to be able to leave them to the generations to come. That is how the Minister of Agriculture and Food Dr. Miroslav Naydenov addressed guests during the discussion on forest fires in Bulgaria. “We should take care of our resources not only with the responsibility of an owner, but also with the responsibility to our neighbors because every act has implications”, he added. Minister Naydenov noted that there is no greater scourge on the Bulgarian forests than forest fires, which, unfortunately, in connection with climate change, are becoming more and more common. We experienced and continue to experience the consequences of such ecological tragedies throughout this year.
Minister Naydenov explained that with the new management structure and management of Bulgarian forests in the face of the six state forest enterprises and fund "investments", a considerable resource amounting to about 40 million leva per year allocated to combat forest fires in future. The funds will be mainly invested in the construction of forest infrastructure. Minister Naydenov said he would do everything necessary for the development of the logistics for additional fire protection, such as setting up early warning systems and providing specialised flying techniques for monitoring and fighting forest fires. For this, funding from the European Union will be sought, he added.
