Biodiversity conservation, guarding and the fight against poachers at the Dospat Reservoir were discussed by representatives of various institutions at a work meeting held at the Dospat Reservoir. The meeting was initiated by the NAFA in relation to the state's role in protecting the water reservoir and the development of fisheries and tourism in the region. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Regional Governor of Smolyan - Eng.Chavdar Furlanski, Prof. Liliana Hadzhinikolova - Director of the Institute for Fisheries and Aquaculture in Plovdiv, Georgi Deyanov- Deputy Director of the Regional Police Directorate of Smolyan, Tsoncho Grablev - Head of the Border Police Sector-Smolyan, Borislav Marinov - Head of the Police Station of Dospat, Eng. Elen Minchev - Director of the RIEW - Smolyan, Eng. Katerina Gadzheva - Head of the RIEW - Smolyan Ventsislav Furlanski - Director of Regional Forest Directorate of Smolyan, Ventsi Gatev – entrepreneur, Peter Kurdov - entrepreneur and representatives of NAFA: Mr.
Hristomir Kopchev - Head Regional Center for Fisheries and Control - Central Bulgaria and Ventsislav Cholakav, Head of the Fisheries and Control Sector of NAFA - Smolyan.
The meeting was opened by the Deputy Regional Governor of Smolyan Eng.Chavdar Furlanski, who said that all institutions are interested to increase security and safety of the Dospat Water Reservoir to prevent pollution and illegal raids and this way to make the reservoir an attractive place for fishing and tourism.
During the meeting Prof. Liliana Hadzhinikolova presented a project of the Institute for Fisheries for an integrated survey of the Dospat Reservoir on net cage facilities, presence of biodiversity and clean water.
Representatives of RIEW presented the results from the active work on non-discharge wastewater into the reservoir and explained that this will be further restricted after the construction of wastewater treatment plant in Dospat.
Deputy Director of the Regional Police Directorate of Smolyan Georgi Deyanov provides data on the joint actions carried out with NAFA inspectors and officers of Executive Forestry Agency on the Dospat reservoir.
Business representatives expressed their satisfaction with the meeting and the commitment of state institutions for the protection and development of the Dospat Reservoir.
One widely discussed issues was the design and rehabilitation of roads around the lake.
All participants in the meeting agreed on the need of rehabilitation of the Dospat Reservoir, including infrastructure construction, fish stocking and active control. Representatives of the institutions agreed to organize more joint inspections and implementation of strict control not only at the Dospat Reservoir, but the region around it.
