To September 20 in Regional Directorates of State Fund “Agriculture” have been submitted 304 applications for participation in the Scheme “School Fruit”. For the school year 2011-2012 total 99 543 children from 714 schools will benefit from the European Program. From the provided budget for purchasing of fruits and vegetables (BGN3 629 629), applicants have been requested BGN 2 716 528. The funding is provided by European Agricultural Guarantee Fund and state budget – as national co-financing and assistance. With a view of increasing interest in the program and with the aim for maximum coverage of children in the target group, it is possible to be launched a new acceptance for the second term.
Applicants are divided into three groups. In the first one are schools. The second group includes sole traders, legal entities and approved producers’ organizations. In the third group are municipalities and schools, which are located on their territory.
At least four different types of fruits and vegetables monthly will receive children under European Scheme “School Fruit”. Among them are: apples, pears, peaches, plums, cherries, grapes, bananas, tangerines, oranges, grapefruits, kiwi, tomatoes, cucumbers and carrots. The amount of financial assistance per child for the supply of fruits and vegetables for 2011-2012 under the Scheme is BNG 27, 29, but the value of the portion is BGN 0, 68. State Fund “Agriculture” will pay financial assistance for done up to 40 supplies. The deadline within which the Paying Agency must approve the participants in the Scheme expires on October 31, and from November 1 starts the delivery of products in schools. The list with eligible recipients of assistance will be published at website of State Fund “Agriculture” until October 31.
“School Fruit” is applied throughout the country within the school year. The Scheme covers all children from third and preparatory groups of kindergartens and students from preparatory to the fourth grades inclusive in schools.
The storage, preparation and supply of fruits and vegetables are in the accordance with the requirements of Food Law. To “School Fruit” Scheme are provided also supporting initiatives as quizzes, games, exhibitions and lectures to create a lasting interest in children towards healthy eating.
