37 of over 1600 samples of domestic animals have tested positive for foot and mouth disease up to now, show the results of research in the reference laboratory at the National Veterinary Service (NVS). Positive samples were taken from sheep, goats, cattle and pigs in the village of Kosti, where the wild boar with FMD was shot.
With a view to containing the spread of foot-and-mouth disease and pursuant to the Action Plan approved by the European Commission, it is required all animals in the village to be destroyed- approximately 250 sheep and goats, 200 large ruminant cattle and 80 pigs. The animals are under quarantine and they will be humanely destroyed as soon as possible by injecting a special medicament. Carcasses will be buried at a specially designated burial site since it is not advisable to transport them to rendering plants in Varna and Shumen. Owners will be compensated on the basis of an assessment made by a committee.
Testing of blood samples from animals within the border municipalities Tsarevo, Malko Tarnovo and Sredets continues up to date, no positive samples found in other settlements.
