The Minister of Agriculture and Food, Ivan Hristanov, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Miguel Alonso Berrio, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Spain to the Republic of Bulgaria. Mr. Javier Moral, Economic and Commercial Counselor, also took part in the meeting.

During the talks, the two officials discussed their respective visions for the future of the EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The interlocutors commented on the similar challenges facing the agricultural sectors of Bulgaria and Spain in the context of recent crises and their consequences. They shared the view that the CAP must remain a strong and autonomous policy supported by an adequate budget.

Minister Hristanov emphasized the importance of achieving full external convergence of direct payments. Ambassador Alonso Berrio stated that he fully understands Bulgaria's position on this matter.

During the meeting, Ambassador Berrio presented the candidacy of Mr. Luis Planas Puchades for Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The importance of a coordinated approach among EU Member States was highlighted, aiming for a unified candidacy with a realistic chance of success.

A brief review of agricultural trade between the two countries was conducted, highlighting the positive dynamics of trade turnover and the potential for its expansion.

The interlocutors exchanged views on the negative impact of the hostilities in Iran on the agricultural sectors of Bulgaria and Spain, as well as Europe as a whole.

Minister Hristanov and H.E. Miguel Alonso Berrio expressed their readiness to continue their productive dialogue on the development of agriculture in both countries by encouraging investment, innovation, and sustainable farming practices.
