Late last night a message from the European Commission arrived with the approval to the measures of the Bulgarian government to contain the spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).

This was announced by Minister of Agriculture and Food Dr. Miroslav Naydenov during the inspection of one of the mobile disinfection stations near the village of Kosti. By the end of the week, representatives of the European Commission will visit our country. Minister Naydenov stressed that there is no place for panic. So far, there is no another confirmed case of FMD. He stressed that if necessary, our country has set aside funds from the state budget to compensate the owners of infected animals.

Meanwhile, the government imposed restrictions on livestock movement in the districts of Burgas, Shumen, Varna, Sliven, and Yambol, as well as the import and export of livestock.

The mobile units will sent all samples they collected from animals in the region to laboratories in Sofia over night. Director of the Burgas Regional Veterinary Service Dr. Dimitar Germanov said that it is possible this not to be FMD because symptoms such as claudication occur in other diseases not only with FMD.
