BFSA finds second batch of fipronil-contaminated egg-yolk powder from Germany, quantities have been seized

In compliance with the enhanced measures taken by the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, a new batch of egg-yolk powder, delivered by Germany, was found. The laboratory analysis showed the presence of fipronil which was above the levels allowed.

The newly found batch in Bulgaria contained 500 kg of the egg-yolk powder. Almost 407 kg of them are available and under ban in the consignment warehouse. The whole amount is destined for destruction. Approximately 93 kg of egg-yolk powder have been already used in the production of about 12500 kg of ice cream. It is also under foreclosure and withdrawn from the market.

On August 28, 2017, the European Commission confirmed the notification done by the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency for the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASSF) as a follow-up action. By this, all Member States are informed that another batch of egg-yolk powder with fipronil has been distributed across the common European market.

At the same time, in order to prevent the Bulgarian market of fipronil contaminated eggs and egg products, inspections of the egg-producing farms, warehouses for trade with eggs and egg products, as well as egg production and processing enterprises in Bulgaria are currently being carried out. Each batch of eggs and egg products with EU origin, for which no evidence of laboratory testing for the absence of fipronil contamination is submitted, will be subject to laboratory analysis. Similar measures apply also to producers of eggs and egg products of Bulgarian origin. A batch of eggs from Poland has already been checked and the test is negative for fipronil.
